Kyiv, Ukraine — When Russia’s full-scale invasion began, few could have predicted that a Ukrainian company would become one of only five in the world capable of building long-endurance reconnaissance drones at scale. Skyeton, founded by engineer and serial entrepreneur Oleksandr Stepura, has done exactly that.

From Doors to Drones

Before turning to unmanned aviation, Stepura built close to a dozen businesses — ranging from heavy-duty security doors to smart ATMs and modular housing. That eclectic engineering background, he has said, turned out to be more useful than expected: know-how from his modular construction work later found application in projects for Ukraine’s security services.

 

With over 18 years in aviation, Stepura founded Skyeton to design and manufacture the ACS-3 (Raybird-3) reconnaissance system — a platform that has been in service with the Armed Forces of Ukraine since 2018.

Driven by a Wish to Help

Beyond the specs and defense contracts, Stepura has spoken about a simpler drive behind Skyeton: building drones that do good beyond the battlefield. That mindset pushed the company to adapt its long-endurance Raybird platform into civilian services aimed at protecting people, infrastructure, and the environment.

 

Skyeton’s civilian lineup now spans five areas:

 

– Fire Monitoring — thermal surveillance that tracks wildfire spread across up to 120 km of forest in a single flight, giving crews earlier warning than ground patrols alone.

 

– Search and Rescue — wide-area scanning that detects human heat signatures across forests, mountains, and disaster zones, cutting the time to locate missing people.

 

– Infrastructure Inspection — long-range aerial checks of pipelines, powerlines, and industrial corridors that would otherwise need repeated manual patrols.

 

– Perimeter Observation — continuous monitoring of borders and industrial boundaries to flag movement before it becomes a problem.

 

– Traffic & Environmental Control — aerial oversight of roads and land conditions where fixed cameras and patrols fall short.

 

Each service runs on the same core numbers that made Raybird a battlefield asset — up to 28 hours of endurance, a 220 km telemetry link, and EO/IR sensors built not to miss much. For Stepura, that overlap is the point: a platform tough enough for a war zone should be just as useful keeping people safe once the fighting stops.

A Voice on the European Stage

Stepura has represented Ukraine’s defense-tech sector at major international forums, including the Follow The Entrepreneur Investor Summit in Zurich and a panel on the future of European defense hosted by FTI Consulting EU in Brussels, where he discussed how Ukrainian deep-tech companies can help strengthen European security.

 

On past scrutiny of Skyeton’s business ties, Stepura has been direct in interviews: he confirmed a longstanding but limited personal acquaintance with Leonid Mindich dating back to a joint visit to the Kirovohrad Flight Academy in 2018, and stated that all communication ceased once Mindich was formally notified of suspicion in an unrelated case.

Looking Ahead

With a combat-tested product, a growing European footprint, and an IPO on the horizon, Skyeton has positioned itself as a rare Ukrainian example of a wartime engineering venture scaling into a global defense-industrial player — built, its founder says, on the same restless curiosity that took him from doors and ATMs to some of the most capable reconnaissance drones in the world.
